New enclosure for Stimson - completed.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to post up a few pictures of my completed enclosure for comments. Thanks for the advice I got in the other thread, I took it on board and I think this turned out well, and so should any more I want to make in the future.
Here is a full shot:
I am using an exo-terra reptiglow 10 for lighting, as anything else is simply too hot. I have it set to come on for a few hours in the morning to warm the air and provide UV B (I know its not necessary) then off for the rest of the day, I also have a 15W heat cord under the hot end which runs 24 hours to heat the ground. Even with the high ambient temperatures we've been having here, Im currently getting a nice gradient of 32-34 at one end down to 27-29 at the other. I've noticed the snake has been very active since moving in, and seems to be enjoying the new surroundings and bigger space. Has also fed successfully since moving in with no hesitation.
One other thing I noticed is that the snake has created a burrow since moving in. The rock he has burrowed under is very steady and is in no risk of moving, but I thought I might check that its not going to cause any risk to the snake if I let it continue? I assume its just burrowed down to get a bit closer to the heat cord under the enclosure.
Cheers,
Patrick

Thanks guys, I've had the bigger bowl in there as it has been quite hot in Perth recently but as we get to cooler months I could easily swap it out.
I am using the 24w bulb for a few hours in the morning, and a 15W 4m heat cord under the left third running 24 hours which keeps the big rock nice and warm all the time.
I have noticed the snake spending increasing time in the burrow since creating it, and temps in there are up to 37-38ish. The rest of the rock and area on top of the substrate around it is about 32 (34 in the heat of the day) - which is what most information states stimsons prefer.. however, this one seems to like it hot?

Looks fine. Like you said, the UV is a waste of time and money but each to their own. If your going to run a light you might as well replicate a realistic photo period though, not much point otherwise in my opinion.

Appreciate the feedback guys.
2fingers its 600x400x450.
Jordan - I originally bought the lights to run a 7-7ish photoperiod but with high ambient temps the air was getting to about 30 whether the light was on or off, so even a thermostat would probably just have it turned off all day, so I tried a lower wattage CFL (the reptiglow) which lights well but doesn't heat well. I am considering just the heatmat during the day, and my infared glow light for night, so temps won't drop much during the night, still experimenting with the 3 globes I have to see what works best.

There are some excellent very low wattage down lights that are good for lighting without heat. Really, the only real need for a light in a snake's enclosure is so that you can see it and appreciate it. So if you are going to have light, either a small daylight fluro or the down lights is the way to go. Don’t use a light that isn’t 100% satisfactory just because you bought it and don’t look like using it. Use something that does the job you want it to. Stick the others in some of the household sockets if you must.
I absolutely agree wit Jordan’s comment about photoperiod. Buy yourself a timer – they are less than 10 bucks. I have had my Arlec timers for so many years that I cannot remember what they cost and they haven’t failed me yet, after years of continuous service. Set to come on at sunrise (not first light) and to go off at sunset. Adjust it at the beginning of each month and the snake will get a realistic photoperiod throughout the year. Occasionally you may have to adjust the “clock time” on the timer, particularly if you have a power failure. But it is dead simple to.
Really nice looking set that your snake should love. I think you find that the branch doesn’t get used because it is simply too high. I would either lower it or leave it for effect and place another branch that is both touching the ground and a few centimetres above it in places.
Nonetheless, well done
Mike

Looks good Exan. With regard to the "lighting without heat" that Bluetongue mentioned. You can buy CFL as low as 5 watts these days that don't get to hot not to mention LED lights in pretty much any configuration you want. Not only can you get them in the standard Edison screw, bayonet, 12V down light, GU10 (240V down light) but also cool strip lights that are no wider than 1cm and only a few mm thick. They come in various lengths and run off 12V. Look on eBay - it's the home of LED lights!

Looks great mate, my old stimmy was a climber rather than a hider. He wrap himself around the highest point in the enclosure.
Herpingmad, got a small strip of those skinny leds in the back of my ute canopy, awesome little waterproof lights

Thanks for the comments guys, recently i have had to move the enclosure into the living room as the study gets too hot. Without lights or the heat mat on, was still getting to over 30 degrees ambient. The living room gets a lot more ventillation and so far temps have been better and i haven't had the heat on for a few days as it just doesn't get cool enough. Do any of you have this problem? I will be sure to turn the heat mat back on when it comes time to feed again.
I think I will try a 5w CFL as I would like to keep the snake sane with a consistent photoperiod, I have a bunch of timers I use in other setups so thats not a problem, its just been experimenting with the globes.
The snake makes regular use of the branch, especially as a basking spot if the light has just turned off and its warm around the cage, but the heat mat is not on. I think it gets enough use to leave it as it is for now. Here is a quick pic although not great because of the shadow:

Thanks Herpingmad. My mistake – I was actually thinking of LED’s when I wrote “down lights”.
You’re right Desert Dweller. Occasionally you do get a stimmie that’s a real climber. The branch looks great, so why move it. Wait and see if it uses it. If not, then you can consider putting in a second as described if you want to.
Thanks for the corrections fellas,
Mike
Exan,
You posted as I was writing the above. Good to see it making use of the branch.
I have a mate with his collection in his work shed – separate from the house. He has two air-conditioning units that he runs on days like today.

Thanks Mike,
I've left the living room air con on, which has it about 28-29 with a max of around 32 at times so shouldn't be too uncomfortable during the heat of the day. It doesn't stay as hot at night, however the next few days will be warm so will take some extra precautions to make sure she doesn't cook.
Cheers,
Patrick
