Burrowing Stimmy
« on: April 04, 2010, 06:52:25 PM »
Just been watching our girl Stimmy and was facinated to see her cruising around the enclosure and burrowing through the Kitties Crumble substrate. She seems to love it, everyday you see tunnels where she has been. Is this common in this species?

Yes, some reptiles do have some odd "hobbies". She / he may be brrowing to stay warm, otherwise I have no idea.

In the picture, she has a half log, does she use that?

yep she has 2 hides 1 at each end as uses both regularly- she definately surveys her backyard and uses both branches and log to bask on, the viv is easy to keep good heat gradient 32 and 26 at each end. Loves to go in her hides and on them- doesnt appear to be too fussy, due for a feed in a couple of days- is she hunting lol?

Are you an intimidating person? She my crap herself when you're around. Is she an adult? She may be assessing the substrate for laying? lol, I have no idea, i'm just throwing educated guesses about.

Sounds like the most logical suggestion

im using newspaper as substrate at the moment and i find my stimmy
likes to hide under the paper, instead of her hide, the temp is between 33 and 27
im using a ceramic lamp considering putting in a heat rock for her as well
just to c if she will stop hiding so much

I'm weary of heat rocks, but use bottom heat for my Stimmies and Woma, it makes little difference to their hiding habits unfortunately,  they spend a lot of time hiding under paper, particularly now they are all starting to brumate.

Alot of my animal, prefer to hide under the substrate( newspaper currently) than their hides..... the biggest culprits are the woma's and BHP's but i also have seen my stimmies do it on occasion, The carpets all prefer their hides than the paper.... .... Stimmies love to explore... enjoy it!
