WTB Magnificent Tree Frogs
« on: June 15, 2012, 12:40:08 PM »
Ok seeing as nobody has any geckos or turtles, how about a couple of Magnificents?
Why are Cat3 animals other than snakes so hard to find???
I've narrowed it down to either a couple of geckos, a couple of frogs or a turtle and nobody seems to have any?!

Also what are the best plants you've tried for a living vivarium?
Someone have something please!!  PM sent by Mike.

Why are Cat3 animals other than snakes so hard to find???  Because people have bred them and found them hard to off load. It can be an expensive exercise hanging on to a hundred frogs etc.  Plus most people dont want to pay $125 for a thick tailed gecko or a MGTF and I guess it gets to a point where it is not profitable to breed. The FACT is that snakes are more popular. Maybe because of the novelty of having something different. Or for people like me, because they are way easier to look after than dragons and turtles. Also I just find them more interesting. I still love all reptiles though  ;D

How much are you willing to spend? I think you said $50 each last time.. You may as well get NGTF from Pet city if that is your budget. If you are willing to pay the $$ you can get the gecko's you want easily enough.

Oh I love snakes way more and they are actually the reason I even got a herp license, but now I can't have one.
So I'm stuck trying to find something nobody breeds...
There would be no point getting NGTFs because they are still only Cat2 and wouldn't count for anything
I have tried explaining to my partner that a python would be the easier and cheaper way to go but the landlord is terrified of snakes and we can't even ask if we're allowed to keep one because of that...

The three I mentioned are the only things I'm slightly interested in keeping other than snakes, being that the monitors and dragons are going to require a lot of heat and room that we don't really have in a unit and I would prefer a turtle or frogs over geckos, but Oblongs do seem less appealing and for some reason harder to find than flat shelled turtles, and the frogs would give me an excuse to plant a live enclosure as well as go towards my Cat4

Does ANYONE breed MGTFs? I don't know what they're worth, but by the sounds of it quite alot

Ahh I see. So you need a cat 3 animal :)
Get a stimi, hatchie and keep it in a click clack. When land lord comes it's easy to hide.
Niall said he's friend bred them this year (MGTF). Not sure how much he will be chasing. I think his post said they were a few months off being ready.

Haha I so could, I have EVERYTHING for a hatchie, but I couldn't do it to my partner, the house belongs to his boss  :-\ We don't want to upset his boss we like having a second income ;)

I would be happy with a couple of frogs, I just don't know where to get them
I also live in Hedland, do frogs fly ok?

i think king skink's, marbled velvet geckoes and western netted dragons are your best options both dave at pp and gary davies should be able to get them for you.
2 bearded Dragons, 1 stimmie, 1 carpet python

I tried getting netteds a few months ago, nobody had them and they require high temps, my partner wouldn't let me keep them inside
I have never seen king skinks for sale either and I think they require a larger enclosure, I already have a medium sized aquarium that was going to house either a turtle or the frogs
I'm really not a gecko person, thicktails or knobtails might have been ok if I'd been able to get them cheaper, I really can't justify $150 for a single small lizard I can't touch, jmo
I know I can't handle frogs either but I find them more appealing than geckos

I asked Niall and he gave me someone to call so hopefully you'll be seeing some nice MTFs soon :)

You can handle frogs... Mine are handled by kids daily, i only look they dont have hair tangled on them b4 i put them back in their home.

I think its weird getting an animal you dont really wont just so you can upgrade your licence. I hope its not a commitment you become sick of and the animal ends up coming second best.

Who's to blame? The system or the people? If all you want to keep is a woma or bhp then you need a cat 3 animal to get there since they are on CAT 4. The rest of Australia has them on basic license next to carpet pythons. I think this is why the other states have most animals on basic license, then vens and harder to keep animals on advanced license.

Exactly what Snowman said, and no the frogs will be fine I do like frogs especially the big green kind and if the NGTFs were cat3 I would have them instead but with only a few 'ok' animals to choose from that are available and don't cost a fortune for what they are, I have to pick one that keeps everyone happy.
Yes I could just wait to get a snake when we find a new house or buy our own, but I've had my license over a year now and I'd be wasting the next 2 years if I didn't at least get it upgraded while I'm waiting.

Orangmada

You should attempt not to handle frogs where possible. If handling must occur the use of a glove is much better for the frog.
